The Changing Landscape of Giving
Executive Director Message for March: The Changing Landscape of Giving
As we move into March, I’ve been reflecting on what giving really means — not just in theory, but in the everyday lives of those who make a difference in the world. A recent Gallup survey offers fresh insight into the state of generosity in the United States, and I believe its findings are both encouraging and inspiring for all of us who serve others.
Giving in a Time of Change
According to Gallup’s latest poll, 76% of Americans reported giving money to a charitable cause in the past year, and 63% gave their time through volunteering. These aren’t just numbers — they reflect a powerful truth:
Generosity persists even in challenging times.
While financial giving has softened slightly compared with pre-pandemic highs, volunteering has rebounded stronger than ever, now exceeding the levels seen before COVID-19.
This shift says something profound about the nature of generosity today. In an era of economic uncertainty and shifting priorities, people are still willing to give — even when it might be easier to hold back.
Time: The Most Precious Gift
Money matters, and financial support fuels mission work. Yet giving time — offering ourselves — carries a special kind of impact. When someone volunteers in an orphanage, mentors a child, serves a meal, or simply listens with compassion, they are offering a piece of themselves that can’t be replaced.
The Gallup findings remind us that people are showing up — with their hands, hearts, and hours — in ways that strengthen families, communities, and nonprofits like OSSO.
A Changing Landscape of Giving
Another important trend highlighted in the survey is that the landscape of giving is evolving. More people are engaging with secular organizations for their charitable activities, and fewer are doing so primarily through religious groups.
At OSSO, we welcome everyone who wants to make a difference — regardless of background or belief. Our shared commitment to helping children thrive transcends labels and unites us around a simple truth:
Every child deserves to be loved.
A Call to Action
I invite you to consider how you can give:
Give your time: Volunteer with us or support a cause you care about. Time spent helping others is among the most transformative gifts we can offer.
Give your heart: Encourage someone who serves. A kind word can sustain a volunteer through long days and challenging moments.
Give financially: Your contributions keep programs running and multiply the impact of every volunteer hour.
Whether you give time, money, or both, your generosity matters. It builds hope, strengthens communities, and reflects the very essence of what it means to serve.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of others.
With gratitude,
Jerrod
